OUR MISSION
To overcome poverty through education in the rural village of Chocolá, Guatemala.
Founded in 2005, Amigos is committed to promoting a sustainable future for the people of Chocolá by providing scholarships to middle- and high school students along with other social and economic development programs.
THE CHALLENGE
IN THE RURAL VILLAGE OF CHOCOLÁ, INHABITED LARGELY BY INDIGENOUS MAYA PEOPLE, FAMILIES SUBSIST ON A MEAGER INCOME OF ABOUT $3 A DAY.
Living in such poverty, few students can afford to attend school beyond sixth grade, since families must pay for middle and high school attendance. This undereducation feeds a myriad of social challenges including an ongoing cycle of poverty.
the response
Since 2011, thanks to the generous support of our donors, 146 students in Chocolá have received Amigos scholarships to attend middle and/or high school.
